Kompas reports that the South Korean government plans to open a consulate in Bali to enhance services and protection for its citizens residing in or visiting the “Island of the Gods.”
The South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia, Yoon Soon-gu, revealed plans for a Denpasar consulate during a meeting with Bali Governor Wayan Koster at the Governor’s official residence, Jayasabha, in Denpasar on Friday, 23 October 2026. During the meeting, Yoon emphasized that security remains crucial to maintaining South Korean tourists’ confidence in Bali as a holiday destination. Consequently, the South Korean Ambassador expressed hope that coordination between the local government and security authorities would continue to strengthen.
”In managing a competitive tourism sector, security must be a priority. I hope that the various relevant agencies in Bali will continue to collaborate and coordinate effectively to ensure collective security,” Yoon stated during his meeting with the Governor. In addition to the plan to open a consulate, the meeting also explored potential cooperation in areas such as clean energy, public transportation, digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and waste management.

Governor Koster welcomed the prospect of collaborating to use digital technology and AI to improve public services, urban management, and the tourism sector. “We are closely following the development of digital technology and AI in South Korea. These technologies could play a significant role in maintaining the quality of Bali’s tourism,” Koster remarked.
Koster also encouraged the use of technology to improve the quality and competitiveness of products from micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as small and medium-sized industries (SMIs), in Bali. Regarding the creative industry sector, Koster highlighted South Korea’s success in bringing K-pop music to the international market. He said this experience could inspire Bali to expand the reach of its artworks and creative products.

Meanwhile, Yoon expressed appreciation for Bali’s efforts to preserve its traditions, culture, and environment amid tourism growth. He noted that this approach could offer valuable lessons for developing sustainable environmental policies. Yoon said he is ready to facilitate communication with relevant parties in South Korea to follow up on potential collaborations aligned with Bali’s specific needs and development priorities.
