Effective 01 September 2026, Garuda Indonesia, the national flag carrier, will implement new accompanying baggage regulations.
Garuda Indonesia is adopting a new piece-concept approach to passenger baggage, rather than luggage weight.
As quoted by BaliPost and the State News Agency ANTARA, Neil Raymond Mills, the Transformation Director of Garuda Indonesia, stated that the new piece-concept will be used to facilitate and ease the travel planning of the Airline’s customers.
“We wish to promote a system that will provide clear information on the number of passenger bags and the maximum weight of those bags that can be brought on a journey. In this way, planning for a trip can now be done well in advance in a seamless way,” said Mills in Jakarta.
Mills said the change to the baggage system is intended to provide more transparent information, allowing better pre-planning for future journeys.
Under the piece-concept scheme, tickets will stipulate an allowance of one piece of baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms. When a passenger brings two bags weighing 23 kilograms, the baggage allowance will be counted as two pieces.
Accordingly, when a ticket stipulates two pieces of baggage with each piece of luggage weighing 23 kilograms, a passenger is permitted to bring two suitcases each weighing a maximum of 23 kilograms. This allowance does not permit the passenger to bring one large suitcase weighing 46 kilograms.
Passengers traveling in Economy Class on a domestic route are permitted to bring one suitcase weighing up to 23 kilograms. Meanwhile, when traveling internationally in Economy Class, passengers are permitted to bring two suitcases, each piece weighing 23 kilograms.
When traveling in Business and First Class, passengers are permitted to bring two pieces of luggage, each weighing 32 kilograms, subject to the specific route and the ticket’s stipulations.
Garuda Indonesia reminds passengers that their baggage allowance will depend on the specific route, class of travel, and ticket type. For this reason, passengers need to take note of the luggage information notated on their eTicket.
Passengers must note the specific limit on the number of pieces of baggage stipulated on their tickets. They should weigh each accompanying bag to ensure that no individual piece of luggage exceeds the stated maximum weight.
Travelers also need to reserve space in their suitcases to accommodate purchases made during their journey and to carry them back home. Any additional bag added to accommodate purchases and gifts would incur an extra-bag charge. Passengers need to pack so that they do not exceed the number of permissible bags or the maximum weight limit for each piece of luggage.
If you exceed the maximum weight allowed for each bag or the total number of allowed bags, excess luggage rates will apply.
Travelers are also reminded that the solution for excessive baggage is not to try to move excess amounts of luggage to their hand or cabin baggage, which are also subject to strict limitations on weight and size,
Cabin Baggage
Cabin baggage is strictly limited to one piece with maximum dimensions of 56 centimeters long, 36 centimeters wide, and a thickness (depth) of 23 centimeters. All three dimensions cannot exceed 115 centimeters in total. The maximum weight for hand-carry luggage is 7 kilograms.
According to Neil Mills, those who purchased tickets before 01 September 2026 will continue to be subject to the total weight restrictions.
Baggage limitations and stipulations may vary for journeys involving more than one airline, such as codeshare flights, interline travel, or journeys involving different air carriers.
Therefore, passengers should always refer to baggage limitations and stipulations noted on their actual flight tickets.
