Many Questions Surround Death of Ozzie Cameron Hughes in Bali

Media in Indonesia and Australia are raising questions about Cameron Hughes’s death on Friday, 10 July 2026, in the toilet of the Indonesian Immigration Detention Center in Jimbaran, Bali.

Hughes was found unconscious in a detention center toilet at 5:25 pm on Friday after he had entered the bathroom an hour earlier and did not emerge. Officials became concerned and entered the bathroom to find the Australian on the floor with a towel wrapped around his neck that was tied to the piping of a nearby toilet.

Cameron Hughes was still breathing when an ambulance was summoned, and guards performed CPR until medical personnel arrived at 6:00 pm. He was then rushed to the nearby Bali Jimbaran Hospital, where he was declared dead at 6:30 pm.

Meanwhile, questions are being raised over inadequate surveillance and monitoring of detainees awaiting deportation, which has become a key focus of the case.

Hughes was being held at the Immigration Detention Center awaiting deportation for overstaying his visa following an acrimonious divorce from his Indonesian wife, who is the mother of his 8-year-old son.

A forensic examination found strangulation marks on the man’s neck and confirmed a history of heart disease and skin ailments affecting both legs. Initially thought to have died from a heart attack, speculation is now turning to the view that Cameron Hughes may have taken his own life, amid deep depression and concern that he would be barred from future contact with his 8-year-old son.

Having lived in Indonesia for 15 years and operating a car restoration workshop, Holden Resto Bali, Hughes’ imminent departure from Indonesia and unsettled financial situation before his death are being reported by the Indonesian and Australian media. Reports say he left behind a sizeable amount of unpaid debt and unfulfilled automobile restoration contracts.

Hughes had recently divorced his Indonesian wife. As a result, Hughes’ KITAP residence permit was no longer valid. In the course of a bitter divorce proceeding and custody battle for their shared son, Hughes’s Indonesian ex-wife reportedly informed immigration authorities in late March that he no longer held a valid visa. Immigration officials also discovered that the man’s car restoration shop did not hold the proper manpower permits required for his legal employment.

The Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, expressed condolences to the 39-year-old’s surviving family.
