Government weather forecasters are warning of the high risk of coastal flooding in Bali during the full moon phase from 28 August until 03 September 2023.
“Be warned and be prepared for high tides in coastal areas,” stated Nyoman Gede Wiryajaya, the coordinator for data and information at the Bali branch of the Agency for Meteorology, Climate, and Geophysics (BMKG), on Wednesday, 30 August 2023.
BMKG-Bali officials have not specified any predicted height of high tides threatening the Island’s coastal areas with floods. Officials have, however, identified seven areas of the Island most at risk of high tides during the full moon: Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Karangasem.
Only one area is NOT at risk of coastal flooding during the change-of-month period: Bulelelng Regency in Bali’s far north.
Linked to high tide schedules and the changing weather conditions, the peak period for coastal flooding varies in each area of Bali.
Weather experts predict wave heights during high-tide periods will reach two meters in the popular tourism areas of Nusa Dua, Kuta, and Badung.
Meanwhile, at Tanah Lot in Tabanan Regency and Sanur, Denpasar waves are expected to measure 1.25 meters.
During the subject period, the Bali Straits between Bali and Java and the Lombok Straits between Bali and Lombok are expected to experience southeasterly winds of up to 35 kilometers per hour and waves measuring two meters.
August is a “Blue Moon” – a month during which two full moons fall within a single month. The first full moon occurred on 01 August 2023, while the second full moon during 30-31 August.
Coastal flooding conditions will impact the loading and unloading of goods and fishing boats at Bali ports of call, water sports activities, sea salt production, and fishing activities.
