The State News Agency ANTARA reports that the Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, confirmed that 1,558 flights were affected by the closure of eight airports due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, a necessary measure to ensure flight safety.
Dudy said the impact on flight schedules concerned both departing and arriving flights after the government decided to extend the temporary closure of the eight airports.
”As of now, across the eight affected airports, there are 1,558 delayed flights and 170,000 stranded passengers,” the Minister confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.
Based on the latest monitoring, the movement of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has shifted eastward at 5 knots at an altitude of 15,000 feet.
These conditions have prompted the Ministry of Transportation—alongside the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency), AirNav, airport operators, and other relevant stakeholders—to monitor the spread of volcanic ash continuously.
The eight airports in question are Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Jakarta), and Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung).
Also included are Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung), Budiarto Airport (Curug, Tangerang), Pondok Cabe Airport (South Tangerang), Taufik Kiemas Airport (West Pesisir, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu Airport (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra).
The Minister explained that, to date, 170,000 passengers have been affected by operational disruptions at these eight airports, including cancellations of flights originating elsewhere.
The government has also prepared alternative airports—such as Kertajati, Ahmad Yani (Semarang), Juanda (Surabaya), Yogyakarta International Airport, and Solo—should airlines choose to divert their flight operations. In addition to providing alternative landing locations, InJourney, together with Angkasa Pura, will arrange free ground transportation—including buses and trains—for passengers diverted through those alternative airports.
