UPDATE 25 AUGUST 2026: Updated figures provided by the National Disaster Relief Agency (BNPB) and published by the State News Agency ANTARA on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, now number at 103 the number of people who died in the massive magnitude 7.7 earthquake on 15 August 2026 at 5:58 am with an epicenter in Nagekeo, NTT and hundreds of aftershocks spread across a very wide region of the Island of Flores..
A further geographical breakdown of the dead records the following totals of fatalities by location:
- 41 dead in Manggarai Regency
- 34 dead in East Manggarai
- 13 dead in Nagekeo
- 6 dead in Sikka
- 5 dead in Ngada
- 3 dead in Ende
- 1 dead in West Manggarai
These numbers were provided by the Interim Head of the Data and Disaster Communication of the National Disaster Relief Agency (BNPB), Berton SP Panjaitan, in a press conference held on 25 August 2026,
Berton said that of the 103 people who perished in the disaster, 45 percent were male and 55 percent were female. Based on the ages of those who died, 45 percent were elderly,37 percent were productive-aged adults, and 12 percent were children and teenagers.
1,666 people suffered serious injuries in the series of earthquakes. Worst affected in terms of injuries was the Regency of East Manggarai, where 239 suffered severe injuries, and 404 were recorded as slightly injured.
Berton said casualty counts were ongoing and could increase as recovery efforts continued.
(REPORT 16 AUGUST 2026) Kompas reports that one death has been reported following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Saturday morning, 15 August 2026, with an epicenter in Nagekeo Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.
Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), announced: “Based on data updates and field validation as of 08:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), one fatality and four injuries have been recorded.”
The deceased and four injured were residents of the Sikka and Nagekeo Regencies on Flores Island. East Nusa Tenggara.
The BNPB, together with the Nagekeo Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and relevant stakeholders, is coordinating efforts to assist victims and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. In Nagekeo Regency, the earthquake was felt strongly for approximately one minute. Most residents felt the shaking and rushed out of their homes. The Nagekeo Regency BPBD subsequently coordinated with relevant agencies following a tsunami early warning.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt as fare away as Lombok Island.
The epicenter of the 15 August 2026 earthquake is 800 kilometers east of the Island of Bali.
Residents in coastal areas were also evacuated to safer locations.
BMKG reported that the quake occurred on Saturday, 15 August 2026, 2026) at 04:58:24 WIB. The epicenter was located at coordinates 8.41° South Latitude and 121.39° East Longitude. The focal depth was 15 km, classifying the earthquake as shallow.
